The land and it’s meaning to Maori

There is a deep respect between Māori and Papatūānuku — Mother Earth.

A symbiotic relationship that goes far beyond what the modern world tends to call "environmentalism."

Looking after the land wasn't an isolated activity for Māori. It wasn't a separate thing they did on weekends or wrote policies about. It was simply part of them — woven into everyday life as naturally as breathing.

There is so much tikanga and karakia around their customs because they understood, completely and without question, what this relationship meant. For their wellbeing. For their survival.

All life — plant, animal, water, mountain — was respected as kin.

The land and its provisions were not something to be exploited or taken for granted. Māori did not consider themselves superior to the land. They considered themselves of it.

Ko au te whenua, ko te whenua ko au.
I am the land, and the land is me.

It spoke of where they came from, where they belonged, and what sustained them. It still does. This whakapapa — this connection — is as relevant today as it has ever been. Perhaps more so. It is why Māori voices are so often at the forefront of climate advocacy and sustainability. They are not discovering something new. They are protecting something ancient — for their mokopuna, and for all of us — bridging past, present and future in a single breath.

The ingredients in our formulas are grown, harvested, and processed with the same care and intention that tikanga demands — because we believe that what goes into a product matters as much as what it does. Where it comes from matters. How it was tended matters. Who did the tending matters.

We also believe that as consumers, we hold more power than we are often told.

Every purchase is a small vote for the world we want to live in. Our collective buying habits are responsible for millions of tons of waste every year — and they are equally capable of driving something better. We can choose products formulated with integrity, ingredients sourced with respect, packaging considered with the end in mind.

One person making one considered choice might feel like very little. But if enough one little persons make that choice — and we believe they will — then things begin to shift.

That is the kind of change worth being part of.
